Time for August traffic and income report. I hope you are as excited as I am!!!
If you haven’t seen my income report up until this point you can check out Jan-July income report here. Now that you are all caught up time for the 1st monthly income report. August was a good month I saw an increase in sponsored post and ad sales via passionfruit ads. So this post is going to be geared toward beginning to sale private ads on your own site and some of the things I did to increase traffic in August.
Time for the good stuff….
Adsense (ads on this blog)————————-$8.11
Passion Fruit Ads————————————$67.07
Lijit now Sovurn————————————-$25.71
BlogHer (Aug 20th-31st)————————–$6.48
Youtube is still my income front runner but as you can see all my other blog income elements are starting to catch up with my Youtube earnings. My goal has been that my blog would bring in as much as my Youtube channel and it looks like it is starting to get to that point. I know it may bot seem like that much but an extra few grand a year isn’t all that shabby.
This month to earn the extra income on the blog I actually decided to invest some time into finding private advertisers and cut out the middle man. I watched a youtube video that had me totally inspired to reach out to businesses in my niche and pitch them my site as a great place for them to advertise.
Here is the video
So after I watched this video it really all just clicked for me because I was like why in the world had I not been doing this all along. I have a site, a specific niche and there are tons of business that want to be seen by my target audience. So I thought about my audience and what would appeal to them most.
I realized that since my audience is mostly made up of women I needed to think about the types of ads they would like and would engage. That is when it hit me that Etsy shop owners were who I should be working with because they have amazing products and they would be of interest to the women that read my blog.
Now I wasn’t just looking at any products. I spent a good amount of time combing through shops that carried fitness products because that is my niche and it wouldn’t make sense to have someone advertise baby clothes on a fitness site. From there I looked through products and I contacted the shop owners that sold products I would actually want to buy.
I explained to them that I had recently opened up private ads and had created a special just for Etsy Shop owners and that my site was geared toward their target audience. The response was amazing.
My takeaway from that this month income wise was if you want it you have to be prepared to go after it. You can’t idly sit at your computer night after night thinking if you write they will come because chances are they probably won’t. As a blog owner that strives to be a business as well some selling is involved especially if you want to have full control over the pricing and types of ads that you offer and show on your site.
One other thing I want to touch on this month is Glitter Network. I wanted to like it like I really wanted to like it but it turned out to be a big flop for me. The month of August my Glitter Ads which I put in my newsletters had 192 clicks but not one conversion which is kinda odd to me since they didn’t require a sale. Anyhow I decided not to invest any more time into Glitter network and am removing them from my roster of affiliate programs. Let me know your experience with Glitter Network I have heard some people have made money with it but I am not seeing it.
Moving on to traffic…
Increase of 1734 from July.
I have been doing well on my goal to increase pageviews every month which I am very happy about. August started off on a high note and I think that was due to a combination of things. In the month of August I had 5 different giveaways running that I believe boosted traffic. I also had one post go semi-viral on facebook. Now things did begin to taper off a bit once school started on the 25th but I still had a really strong month.
Here is the post…
The increase in popularity from this post on facebook did spill over on to the blog which was a nice litter booster to traffic. As you see I said semi-viral not all of the facebook attention converted into traffic on to the blog so the increase wasn’t as nice as if it had been a full blow sensation…lol….but every little bit helps.
According to Google Analytics my top traffic referrers were….drumroll please
The majority of people came directly which is a good thing they have a nice low bounce rate. #2 is Facebook if you add up all the facebooks on there. Which is surprising to me this month since its usually not one of my top performers for traffic but then again I did have that semi-viral post. #3 is Google which is always nice they have a bit higher bounce rate but I am not complaining. Then we have stumbleupon in #4 now I talked last time about how the traffic from stumbleupon can be a killer to your bounce rate because people are literally just jumping from blog to blog. StumbleUpon isn’t terrible but make sure that you have a nice mix of traffic so that your bounce rate doesn’t take a total hit.
You can also see that since I had those giveaways going on I got some traffic from the giveaway promotion sites. I am not running a giveaway blog so I won’t be filling up my blog with tons of giveaways every month but this month I was wanted to test out a few things surrounding giveaways and increasing certain social page stats like Facebook, Twitter, Email List and Pinterest. It turned out to be a pretty good deal but now I have to evaluate if the people gained through this means are of any value. My guess is that most of them are NOT.
Giveaway people rarely engage and I have noticed that most of them use emails just for giveaways. So in the end giveaways are great to inflate numbers but not really great for continued engagement once all the giveaways end.
I am sure I will run a giveaway here and there for the different brands that I work with but not as a means to increase numbers. I want people who want to follow and subscribe purely because my content is valuable but not because of a hope to win something and then just disappear until I give something else away.
I have noticed lately in researching blogs that do tons of giveaways that although they have crazy amounts of fans and followers they have very very limited engagement which speaks volumes for me personally. I am sure someone else could argue some totally different point but for me the giveaways don’t seem to be valuable beyond inflating numbers to entice brands but not to actually spark continued engagement beyond the giveaway.
I learned a lot the month of August about really putting myself and my blog out there. I think being more aggressive in reaching my goals was definitely my takeaway this month.
- Know your niche and be able to explain to potential advertisers why you all should be working together.
- Be your own sales team if you can’t sell your blog to others then who else is going to do it.
- Giveaways are short cuts to increase numbers but don’t increase engagement beyond the end of the giveaway.
What are your thoughts on reaching out to advertisers and on running giveaways to increase your blogs social media numbers?
