IF YOU MAKE IT TO THE END OF THIS POST I HAVE A FREE GOODIE FOR YOU!!!
Things have been crazy around here with so many transitions so this post has been a long time coming. I had planned on doing my income report last month and then I had planned on doing it earlier this month. Neither of those happened. I am back in the swing of things and have so much to share with you all.
First you may have noticed that Fitness Fashionista looks different! The reason for this is because I have decided that I wanted to expand the direction of the site to include a number of other topics that I am interested in writing about, more on that a little later.
Second if you were a fan of my Blogger Playbook blog you noticed that it now redirects back to my blogging tips page here on Fitness Fashionista. So you may be wondering what happened to Blogger Playbook. Honestly I was stretched entirely too thin and realized that maintaining more than one blog was just not feasible.
However in deciding to bring my blogging tips back to Fitness Fashionista I made an amazing discovery!
Many people will tell you that if you have a blog you need to stick close to your niche and I believed this too until I discovered RSS Categroy feeds. I am able to give people the ability to subscribe to just the categories that they are interested in being updated on. If you are interested in setting up a category specific email list I created a tutorial and just put it in a pdf that you can download to walk you through all of the steps. I figured it would be easier if you had something you could print off an then follow along.
So instead of starting an entirely new blog about blogging I can post my blogging tips here and have the readers that want to be updated via email sent RSS campaigns through Mailchimp for that particular category. I thought that was awesome. My blogging readers get blog tips and my fitness/weight loss readers get those post. Now all my content is housed in one place and my email list are all very very niche specific without the hassle of maintaining more than one site.
In a nutshell that is what happened to Blogger Playbook.
Why Does Fitness Fashionista Look Different?
I decided that the black and gold just didn’t embody the direction that I wanted to take the blog. I wanted this to be a fun and upbeat place that exuded a fun and creative energy. I recently left nursing school to blog and do graphic design full time and so the blog will now house my design shop as well. On Jan 1st I began doing printables and custom design work for a bunch of other bloggers after the immense success of my other printables that I have created for myself. Like my Ultimate Fitness Tracker (downloaded over 10k times).
I have already seen the benefits of the redesign, which I did myself 🙂
So now that you all know what is going on lets dig into what happened in November and December 2014
The last income and traffic report that I created was for October and here were the goals that I had listed back in October.
- Consistently cross promote content across YouTube and the blog. (NOT MET)
- Increase income by $150 for the month of November. (NOV. NOT MET BUT EXCEEDED IN DECEMBER)
- Increase pageviews by 1,000 (I am being very optimistic).
- Find some balance between work and life. October was stressful with everything I had on my plates and I want November to be a little less chaotic. (NEEDLESS TO SAY THINGS REALLY HIT THE FAN NOV. AND DEC)
- Increase traffic from Twitter and Google+ at least by 2% (hopefully I can find the magic strategy). (NOPE BUT I WILL EXPLAIN WHY)
I spent a good portion of Novemeber and December working on my strategy for the New Year. I wanted to ring in the New Year with a bang so I reevaluated the time that I was spending on things that just didn’t work. I was spending a ton of time trying to increase views on YouTube and get more traffic from Twitter and Google+ …WHY? Well I thought that I needed to be the master of them all instead of focusing on the sites that were bringing me the traffic.
To date Pinterest, Facebook and Google Search are my top referrers and so I am no longer engaging in time wasting activities to break the code on any of the other networks. However I do still post to them but I don’t spend time on developing them like I do on pinterest and facebook.
I challenge you all to stop engaging in time wasting activities. Why spend hours trying to crack the code on networks that aren’t working for you. Spend the time making the networks that are working for you even better. Personally for me instead of trying to figure out how to get more traffic from Twitter or G+ I spend that extra time to make even better graphics for Pinterest because I can see the ROI (return on investment). So take a minute and look at your top referrers and spend time creating a strategy to rock them out further.
|Private Ad Sales||$191.65|
|Adsense (youtube + blog)||$244.92|
|Private Ad Sales||$171.65|
|Adsense (youtube + blog)||$282.17|
So as you can see I didn’t meet my goal in November but I clearly redeemed myself in December. Now I worked my butt off in December and realized that there was entirely too much sponsored content on my blog and that it was clear I needed find a different way to bring in income. This month I have only posted 1 sponsored post and made my money by offering my graphic design services to other bloggers. I think that I have found the balance that I ultimately wanted. Now I just have to keep that balance.
I just want to preface this by saying that the months of November and December I was struggling with nursing school and the blog and all the at darn sponsored content. So traffic just wasn’t at the top of my list of things to focus on. So it definitely didn’t increase but I promise this month I have than redeemed myself but you all will have to wait until next months traffic and income report. So subscribe to my blogging tips list so that you don’t miss that one because its going to be a good one 😉
Clearly I was not focused on this area of the blog. The best thing about doing these reports is that I can clearly see when I don’t work on the blog how the traffic can suffer.
So how do these numbers compare to Octobers report. Here is the breakdown for pageviews.
November———————-12,676 (-4292 from Oct)
December———————-10,335 (-2341 from Nov)
Keep in mind that the end of the year can sometimes be a time where all blogs see a bit of a slump in traffic unless you have a lot of holiday type content. I wasn’t discouraged by these numbers because in the Fitness niche the New Year means tons of traffic. Are you on weight loss journey for the New Year 🙂 ?
Note that although my traffic went down in December my income did not. So if you don’t have huge numbers do not be discouraged you can make money blogging.
My top referrers was direct traffic which is just people coming to my site directly so we will move on to my 2, 3 and 4. Like I said earlier Pinterest, Google Search and Facebook are my top referrers for my site. I have been spending quite a bit of time learning as much as I possibly can about pinterest lately and researching popular pins of others to tailor my pins to replicate the same success. I think that I have pretty much gotten it down at this point. The pin for this very post is an example of how I have changed my pinning strategy. Feel free to pin it!
As far as google I believe that the reason I have been getting more search traffic is because I have gotten more backlinks to give my site a little more authority. Here is the short version of how I got those backlinks. When I create content I have been linking to other articles/blogs that would be of interest to the person reading my post. So the site owners see traffic coming from my post where I mentioned them and next time they write something they just might mention you or link to one of your post.
It may be worth trying. However I am not talking about huge bloggers because people probably link to them all the time and your link may just get lost. So look at smaller or medium sized bloggers in your niche. Adding links to content that compliments your content is a great way to add value to your readers and to possibly get a little link love back.
Lets wrap it all up
- Managing more than one blog is hard work and there are alternative ways to write on multiple topics on one blog. (see the next highlight)
- Create different RSS feeds for your different categories so that your readers can subscribe to only they content they truly want to stay updated on. This allows you to create some very targeted email lists.
- Stop engaging in time wasting activities. Find what works and focus on making it better and better. Your time is better spent focusing on things that provide a positive ROI (return on investment).
- When your blog becomes a walking infomercial its time to reevaluate. However if that is your goal then go for it but for those that want less sponsored content look for other ways to make money through blogging (create a course, sell and ebook, learn to design blogs) .
- Traffic doesn’t always mean a decrease in money. You have to learn to find the opps and don’t focus on the fact that you might have low numbers. Clearly all anyone can say is no so apply apply apply.
- Give link love to other bloggers in your post as long as its relevant. This can really help you with getting backlinks back to your site.
This month is almost over so the only goal that I have is to get next months income and traffic report out earlier in the month. I will have goals next month for sure.
Congrats you made it to the very end of this post and here is your reward. This is a income tracker printable so that you can keep track of the where your income is coming from each and every month. ENJOY!
Did you suffer from the holiday traffic slump or did your blog traffic stay steady?
