Lately I have been thinking a lot about simplifying my life. I realized that we or I spend so much time over complicating and overthinking just about everything.
Looking back and really reflecting I have realized that the biggest thing that has hindered me in my journey to lose weight or even reach certain goals is the fact that I made things so complicated.
I repeatedly complicated things to the point that I got discouraged and gave up or resorted to laying on my couch and binge watching netflix.
I mean lets be real. People have been gaining and losing weight for years long before swanky gyms, magic pills and multi level marketing companies peddling the latest and greatest. So what’s changed?
Personally I think that we have over complicated things to the point that we feel all those things are necessary in order for us to reach that ideal number on the scale.
Of course if we don’t have access to all of those things we began to get discouraged and start distracting ourselves to not think about it.
It doesn’t stop there either. I see it everywhere and it affects every segment of my life.
Do you know how long I have been thinking about writing this post? A month! WHY!?!? Because I allowed myself to completely over complicate and overthink my message.
The very first thing that happens is this:
- You have goal or an idea.
- You are super pumped about whatever it is but that feeling doesn’t last.
- Soon enough you start to doubt yourself and your ability to make whatever it is happen.
Then it starts to feel more and more complicated the more you think about it. Until you are like myself and flood yourself with distractions in an effort to just not even deal with it.
So instead of writing this post I reorganized my office for about the 10th time this year, I binged watched all 5 seasons of Secret Life of An American Teenager (the finale sucked by the way), season 4 of Orange is the New Black (so sad), Season 2 of Between (it’s getting better season 1 kinda sucked), finished Game of Thrones, rewatched Valley of the Dolls and then contemplated working for a non profit because if I can’t help myself I should focus on other peoples problems.
Then I finally got my act together around episode 6 of Penny Dreadful after sleeping through episodes 3-5. Now here we are!
When I think about what a simple life looks like it looks like a day I recently spent downtown with my son. We got up, got dressed ate breakfast and I shot off a few emails before we headed downtown.
There was no real plan or agenda.
We took the time to take everything in.
No over complicated list of things that needed to be done before we could enjoy our day. It was freeing to just watch him be a kid.
The beauty of the entire thing is that it was simple. We got to spend time together and I got a workout running around the city with him.
Now I realize that everyday can’t be exactly like this but they don’t have to be as complicated as we make them. I don’t need to find a million hours a day to workout. I don’t need to answer every email immediately. I don’t need every new plugin or program to get more readers for my blog. I especially don’t need to overthink and analyze every detail of my existence.
I think it is about getting back to the basics.
